In Daytona Beach, Florida, a suspected carjacker tried to break into a woman’s apartment, but was surprised by her two protective pit bull pups reports the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

On Monday, August 14, Anthony Galloway, 42, did escape from the woman’s dogs, but was later captured by authorities at a nearby warehouse.

Earlier that day, the suspect had pulled a gun on a man who had been pumping gas and demanded his car and his money. The stolen Toyota Corolla was then abandoned at the Whispering Winds Apartments, where the suspect banged on a woman’s door. When the woman heard the unidentified person yelling “Momma,” she became concerned and partially opened the door; it was then Galloway forced himself into the woman’s apartment.

The woman immediately called her two pit bulls and commanded them to attack, and they did! As authorities arrived at the apartment, Galloway ran to escape and broke a window in the second floor kitchen and jumped. A SWAT team was able to follow and apprehend the suspect. About 70 law enforcement officers were involved in the response.

Galloway was taken to the hospital and treated for injuries. He now faces charges of carjacking with a firearm, armed robbery, grand theft, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, resisting arrest, possessing a firearm by a convicted felon, criminal mischief and trespassing.

What could have been an even more tragic situation involved the gun the suspect had thrown away during his escape. Police reported a seven-year-old boy found the weapon and had accidentally fired the handgun, striking an unoccupied apartment. Fortunately, no was was injured.

Good dogs! Here’s hoping the dogs received some tasty treats for their loyalty towards their owner.

As reported by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office pertaining to the suspect:

“Galloway’s criminal history includes 67 prior felony charges with 12 convictions, and 25 prior misdemeanor charges with 22 convictions. His prior charges include 13 counts of grand theft of a motor vehicle, 3 counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, aggravated battery of a law enforcement officer, burglary with battery, armed robbery, aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude, cruelty toward a child, and narcotics offenses.”

Galloway remains held without bond at the Volusia County Branch Jail.
