A man from North Carolina viciously attacked a family’s 11-year-old dog on Monday stabbing it repeatedly while its owner had been playing pickleball not far away.
According to the Asheville Police Department and Skyline News, James Wesley Henry, 43, has been arrested for killing the mixed breed dog named Beignet and charged with felony animal cruelty. Henry is alleged to have just walked up to the dog lying peacefully under a tree, grabbed the dog and stabbed him in the throat over and over; basically “eviscerating” it according to Asheville Police Captain Michael Lamb.
The dog’s owner, Liesbeth Mackie, said Beignet had been sleeping under the tree just feet away from the pickleball court when the group of players heard a man shouting to himself, but no one took any action because he wasn’t yelling at anyone in particular. Just moments later, Henry brutally attacked Beignet.
A neighbor saw the disturbing incident and wasn’t even sure what had happened, but then saw and heard Beignet covered in blood and dying. Henry then casually walked away after dropping the knife.
“She was peacefully lying in the shade — she was tied up with a very long leash,” Liesbeth Mackie said as she sat in the bereavement room of the Animal Hospital of North Asheville late Monday afternoon. “Then my (pickleball) partner said, ‘Someone’s beating your dog.’”

Authorities were notified, and when police arrived, Henry surrendered without incident. He is currently being held in the Buncombe County Detention Facility in lieu of $10,000 bond.
