In Charlotte County, Florida, the Charlotte County deputies have charged Chloe Wisniewski with neglect after leaving her infant alone with a puppy she had adopted off of Facebook to take a shower.

According to People, Wisniewski, 21, was arrested on Friday for child neglect after a four-month investigation into the attack on her then four-month-old infant she left in the same room alone with a three-month-old puppy. The young mother had been in the shower and came running out when she heard the infant screaming as the puppy chewed the baby’s fingers.

The infant was flown to Tampa General Hospital for emergency treatment.

According to the Miami Herald, authorities said the Department of Children and Families conducted an assessment of Wisniewski, whose urine analysis allegedly tested positive for THC at the time.

Surgeons were not successful trying to reattach the infant’s fingers and had to amputate three fingers on the infant’s left hand – the 3rd, 4th and 5th digits. On the right hand, the infant lost her 3rd and 5th fingers.

The disturbing incident occurred on Valentine’s Day after Charlotte County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the family’s home. The Charlotte County Animal Control arrived and removed the dog named Apollo; a bully breed puppy the woman had just adopted the day before after seeing his picture on Facebook.

Authorities are not blaming the dog’s breed, and the mother at no time should ever have left her infant alone with a puppy – especially one that she just brought home the day before.

Apollo has since been transferred to the Animal Welfare League.

The baby is recovering with family members. Wisniewski has been released on $7,500 bond and granted supervised visitation.
