Charges filed against mule operator forcing mule to smoke on route to sacred temple

The Uttarakhand Police have lodged a complaint against a mule operator forcing a mule to smoke a cigarette through his nostrils on the Kedarnath yatra route to the sacred temple. The temple is located on the Garhwal Himalayan range in India.

According to the Indian Express, a video released on social media, that quickly went viral, showed two people holding the mule by the neck and pushing a cigarette to its nostrils, making it inhale the smoke as it breathes. It is suspected they had done this to ensure the mule could carry more weight.

On Saturday the Uttarakhand Police issued the following press release:

Taking cognizance of the video being circulated on social media showing owners feeDing cigarettes through the nostrils of horses/mules on the Shri Kedarnath Dham Yatra route, on the complaint fo the sector officer, legal action is being taken by registering charges against the horse operator under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Animal Cruelty Act.

The police reported they have registered a total of 14 cases in connection to equine cruelty.
