In Shaker Heights, Ohio, K-9 Officer Igor and his handler Chad Hagan had been together since the dog was barely a year old. When Chad opted to move his family to another city, he gave Police Chief Wayne Hudson his two-week notice on Thanksgiving.

K-9 Officer Igor, a German shepherd has been Hagan’s partner for six years, and was raised by Hagan’s wife and their young child. This is the only home Igor has ever known, and Igor has even been credited with having saved Chad multiple times while on duty. The bond between Igor and Hagan is strong; the two are inseparable.

According to social media, Hagan had expected to take Igor with him as often allowed by the departments for a nominal fee. In this case, however the police chief refused, stating Igor would remain in service for another year-and-a-half, even though Igor has slowed down.

And now Igor has been placed in a kennel by himself, and it is not known how this dog, who has only known his family since having been a puppy, is coping being isolated. The kennel has since renamed him – now calling his “Ramos. And since November 29, Igor has been isolated from everyone.

In an effort to bring his loyal dog back to him, Hagen offered the police department $10,000 to purchase the dog, however he was refused, referring to “K-9 Igor is a TOOL,” and he could not be purchased. The community, K9 experts and animal advocates have come out in droves, stating it would “be in the best interest for all involved if the SHPD granted this request.”

Section 141.07 of Shaker Heights’ City ordinance states that a police officer who leaves the city while the dog is assigned to that officer, forfeits his right to purchase the animal. Chief Wayne Hudson offered Hagan the option to stay for two more years and then take the dog home with him, but Hagan declined.

In addition, a staff canine trainer offered to train a new K9 officer for free if Igor was allowed to join his family.
