Most dog owners have seen the truly touching movie about Hachiko, the loyal dog in Japan, who returned every day to the train station after his owner passed away. A statue of the dog stands outside the train station; a reminder of the love and loyalty this dog demonstrated until the day he died.

And now in Kerala’s Kannur, a dog named Ramu has spent the last four months waiting for his owner to return outside of the hospital’s mortuary.

According to India Today, the patient who had been Ramu’s owner, arrived together at Kannur District Hospital, but the dog had to wait outside. Sadly, the patient died, and Ramu saw the hospital staff take his deceased owner to the mortuary. The dog, of course, didn’t understand what was happening and expected his owner to return to him. And so, Ramu has been waiting outside of the mortuary door.

As in the story about Hachiko, the story has touched people around the world who have been reminded of the special bond dogs have with their humans.

Kerala: a faithful dog stationed himself near a hospital’s mortuary door in Kannur. The dog’s owner is believed to have died and the hospital and been taken to the mortuary.

The dog is lying on the ramp where the body is shifted from the hospital to the mortuary. The body would have been taken out from the door on the other side. The dog could still be there thinking its owner is inside…

Staff members at the hospital watch Ramu walk through the veranda and then lie down in front of the mortuary. He doesn’t hang out with other dogs. Kind staff members and neighbors are making sure Ramu has access to water and food.
