In Raleigh, North Carolina, Brandon Fitch had quite the story to tell about a squirrel who played havoc under the hood of his car. This particularly industrious, lady rodent, while flashing her adorable, fluffy tail, had built a nest full of leaves, sticks and pine needles under the hood of his vehicle.

According to WralNews, Fitch had been away for nearly one week and had left his car at home. The evening he returned, he went out, and the engine light came on. We all know that engine lights usually mean trouble, but who would have expected this to have happened?

At the Toyota dealer the next morning, the mechanic opened the hood, and there was the squirrel still in her nest. And not to be a squirrel that has any notion of what belongs to whom, she jumped up at the mechanic, tried to bite him, and three more mechanics had to finally shoo the little beast out of the car with a broom.

After the mechanics cleared away the nest, they found the squirrel had chewed through the wires. The repair quote estimated 30 hours of labor at $180 an hour for three days, and the bill added up to $8,500 when all was done and repaired.

After Fitch posted his story on social media, lots of comments and suggestions started to pour in to keep squirrels away; one of which suggested using peppermint spray around the car.

Fortunately, insurance paid for Fitch’s repairs.

There has not been any follow-up on the squirrel, but we are optimistic she went and found a safer place to await the arrival of her babies or for taking a winter’s nap.
