A devastated couple were left devastated after their beloved shepherd drowned at a popular Western Australian beach after he was sucked into a reef with a strong riptide.

According to 7News, Georgia Crook had been standing in the shallow water near the shore at 11 Mile Beach in Esperance on Wednesday; her two dogs accompanying her. It was within just a matter of minutes that the dogs had been playfully paddling around her, when suddenly one of the dogs disappeared into the strong rip current.

Crook’s partner, Ash Bowman immediately swam out to find the dog, but to no avail and struggled in the current fighting his way back to shore. Luckily, Ash had been clinging to a rock which likely saved his life. The couple had no idea such a rip current even existed since the beach seemed so calm. Sadly, the couple’s Australian shepherd, Mushu died.

Crook decided to share her terrible experience on a community Facebook page to warn other dog owners and beachgoers of the dangers at that beach. They were shocked when other people responded to the horrible tragedy, stating they also had experienced those same rip currents in the past.

Sorry to hear about this. I lost my dog many years ago in the same spot.

So sorry to hear this. Unfortunately it’s not the first time this has happened. it really is dangerous.

The couple hoped that Mushu’s body would wash up to shore so they could bury him back home.

Had there been a sign in that area that warned people of the riptide caused by the reef, the couple feel Mushu would still be alive. For sure, since Georgia is pregnant and only a few weeks from giving birth, the couple and their dogs would never have gone to that part of the beach had they known about the deadly currents.

On the Facebook page for the Esperance Community, the couple are asking for warning signs and action from the local government. In a follow up statement, the shire said signs were already posted warning of coastal hazards including strong currents and slippery rocks. It would seem from the comments of other beachgoers as well as what just happened, more signs need to be posted.

Rest in peace Mushu.
