In Chickamauga, Georgia, an eight-month-old puppy returned home from a training kennel both sick and pregnant. The poodle, named Nala, had been sent to Savage River Kennel in January for four weeks of training.

According to Fox News, the dog’s owner, Steven Schild said he never thought he would be taking care of seven puppies; after all Nala is just a puppy herself. In addition, the contract stated the trainer was to notify the owner if the dog went into heat. Nala had not displayed any symptoms of going into heat before she left for the training kennel.

When she returned home, the puppy was also infected with Giardia – a parasite that gastrointestinal issues and usually spreads when dogs consume the feces of infected animals.

Nala’s owner wants the kennel to pay them back and help with the cost of the puppies until they are adopted, however the contract also stated Savage River would not be responsible for a pregnancy nor liable for the cost of caring or rehoming the puppies.

The Savage River Kennel does not have a current pet dealer license. Jason Smith, with the Georgia Department of Agriculture, stated the kennel previously had a license, but they had not met the requirements, so they stopped doing the business which means they didn’t need a license.

The kennel, which has not renewed its license for several years, had a pet dealer license that expired in March 2021 and a kennel license that expired in March 2023
