A black bear cub stuck in a tree had to accept the help of a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officer, a biologist and a chainsaw.

According to the FWC, the cub got his back paw stuck in the crook of a tree and no matter how hard he twisted and pulled, his paw wasn’t moving – thus keeping this little guy quite annoyed and not very cooperative, even for the humans who wanted to help him.

It had been a local resident who spotted the cub and officers quickly arrived to help the cub free his paw by the tried and true method of slathering on lots of dish washing liquid soap to make his paw slippery. When that didn’t work, it was on to Plan B.

Cub Conundrum

Remember that time you got stuck in an unusual predicament? Just me? Anywho…somehow this little bear cub got a back paw solidly stuck in the crook of a tree, so our officer called in one of our bear biologists to help the poor lil guy. Together they worked for two hours in the blazing sun (all while attempting to avoid sharp claws and teeth!) trying to pry the tree limbs apart, moving this way and that… even soaking the leg in dish soap, but nothing worked.

The last resort was to use a chainsaw borrowed from a local homeowner, and while the biologist held the cub as still as he could, the officer used the chainsaw to hack off the tree limbs keeping the little guy trapped.

Free at last! The little guy was given a quick medical checkup to make sure he didn’t suffer any injuries, and then he was released back to his mom.
