In Cary, North Carolina, a 100-pound Great Dane puppy named Mudge had a scary experience on Saturday afternoon. The 11-month-old puppy had been running and frolicking in puppy style with her sister pooch Moonshine near the family’s recently purchased new home when she fell into an old dried up well covered with barbed wire and leaves.
It was when Mudge didn’t return from her romp that her family grew worried. The family searched the entire area, and as they closed in at the location of the well, they could hear Mudge barking from inside of the well. Janine Haldene, the owner of the dogs, called 911 for help.
Fire crews from Cary, Fairview and Swift Creek arrived and used special equipment to rescue the puppy. A veterinarian also was on site to provide the necessary treatment. One of the firefighters descended into the well to attach a rope to Mudge to hoist her up. The rescue efforts took hours, but the result was the best – as Mudge arrived safely from the well, she kissed her rescuer on the face!
Fortunately, the puppy did not suffer any injuries except for a small scratch on her lower leg.
Today, a very large puppy named “Mudge” made several new friends with Fairview Rural Fire Department Swift Creek Fire Dept, and Cary Fire Department. Mudge fell down into an old well off Old South Road. Our friends at the Cary Fire Department were able to rescue the 100 puppy this afternoon around 2 pm. Mudge is doing well and will take a long puppy nap this evening

The well will be filled in and safely secured so no future dangers will arise. That was very scary – it could have been a child playing in the area.
