On Friday morning, a young rider died after being thrown from a horse at a race track in Keeneland, Kentucky. As reported by WKYT News, 20-year-old Callie Witt was thrown from a two-year-old horse that she was riding on the Keeneland training track. Witt’s death has been called a “freak and tragic” accident.
Witt, an exercise rider for Joe Sharp, struck her head on a post after being thrown and she died shortly after being attended to by on-site medical professionals.
Marty McGee, a writer with Daily Racing Form, said:
“Joe Sharp describes it as a freak and tragic accident that the horse the young lady was on, was spooked somewhat, fish-tailed, catapulted her in the air. Apparently, she struck a railing or a vertical post, concrete. Injuries were such that she died shortly thereafter,”
In a statement, Keeneland President and CEO Shannon Arvin said:
We are heartbroken by this tragic loss. Our hearts and prayers go out to Callie’s family, friends and our collective racing community at this difficult time.”
