California wildlife officials are on a mission to find, and put down, a 500-pound bear who has been breaking into homes in the Lake Tahoe area. As reported by Yahoo News, the bear has been on a quest to find food, and now he may pay the ultimate price…his life.

A Department of Fish and Wildlife spokesperson has confirmed that 38 homes have been accessed by the bear, and sometimes those homes have been occupied by people. Jason Holley, a supervising wildlife biologist with the Fish and Wildlife Department, told South Tahoe Now, “It is the point of no return for this bear, but the public needs to fix the things that brought us to this point, or it will continue.”

But not everyone wants the bear to be killed – an advocacy group is hopeful that it can be captured and moved to a sanctuary instead. Wildlife officials have stated that the bear cannot be relocated to another area because they don’t think that he can find food on his own. Ann Bryan with Bear League tells CBS Sacramento, “they usually die a horrible death trying to survive after relocation.”

However, the sanctuary prospect might still be on the table. Bryan tells the news agency, “They do not want the bear to pay the price for human ignorance. So when a bear is set to die in their community, people take a stand.”

Until a decision is reached, wildlife officials and members of the advocacy group want residents in the area to bear-proof their properties.
