In North Charleston, South Carolina, a cat who underwent surgery to remove 38 hair ties from her stomach has died. The cat, named Juliet, had been brought to the Charleston Animal Society by a Good Samaritan after it was discovered she had been abandoned by her owners after they moved away.

When Juliet first arrived at the shelter, she seemed to be fine, but several weeks later she stopped eating and showed symptoms of being sick. After radiographs were done, veterinarians saw an unusual blockage in her stomach that needed to be removed in order for her to survive.

Juliet was brought to Charleston Animal Society along with two other cats by a Good Samaritan who said they had been left outside a home when their family moved out of state. Juliet seemed fine at first, but after several weeks, she began not eating and became lethargic. Radiographs showed she had an unusual sort of blockage in her stomach that would kill her if it was not removed

According to the organization’s Facebook page, Dr. Leigh Jamison, Charleston Animal Society Associate Director of Veterinary Care and their team, found ” a seemingly endless bundle of strings” that they continued to remove during the cat’s abdominal surgery. Once the more than three dozen ties were removed, the staff had hoped the cat would survive since there was no damage done to her intestines. However, a buildup of fat in her liver presented a serious health complication.

On Friday evening, the sad update about Juliet was posted on social media.

Our expert veterinarians and lifesaving team perform what we think are miracles every single day. Unfortunately, even with the best care, not every animal makes it. Even though Juliet was loved and was not suffering during her last days, she did succumb to this tragic accident.

Rest in peace Juliet. It is not known how Juliet ingested the ties.
