A sweet dog is finally receiving veterinary care after his former owners ignored his massive salivary tumor for an astounding six years. According to the Long Way Home rescue group, Jake was loved by his former family, but they did not take him to a veterinarian when his face began to swell.

The group said:

Jake has been living with a salivary tumor for (according to the owners) SIX YEARS, as they assumed it was the result of a snake bite. He lived as an indoor dog, is exceptionally well behaved, potty trained, good with other dogs, and even knows how to shake.

Last week, after Jake was found roaming in a rural part of Texas, Cribs for Canines began working to get his family to relinquish custody in order to get Jake the veterinary care he so desperately needs. Jake is receiving care in Waco and he has already been given tremendous relief because a huge amount of fluid was drained. The organization said:

We are so grateful to the amazing folks at Texas Animal Medical Center in Waco, where Dr. Lide and his team have been treating Jake so far, and even drained 1200cc of salivary fluid from his neck. (Check out the last two photos to see what an amazing difference it made!) 😮

The agency said:

Jake was able to turn his head for THE FIRST TIME IN SIX YEARS. It was such a simple thing that could have been done to give him relief! He is eating and pooping well, has great spirits, and is overall in great condition otherwise.

There are no guarantees that Jake will make a full recovery, but caring people are working to give him the best chance possible. Follow his rescuers at this link to Facebook.
