Shenandoah Shepherd Rescue has updated the public about the condition of an elderly, neglected German shepherd who was recently saved from a Texas animal shelter where he was scheduled for euthanasia. The dog, dubbed Larry, was saved from death on Sept. 28. Because of his frail condition, he was taken directly to a veterinary hospital for emergency care.
The day after Larry was saved, the rescue agency commented on the overwhelming response they received about his dire situation, and their gratitude:
I am blown away by the outpouring of love shown to Larry and the realization that Larry Smith is alive because of this wonderful Nation we’ve built!
Detailing just how poor his condition is:
Larry is emaciated at 83lbs and should weigh roughly 100lbs. His lab values look pretty well for a 13 year old boy with inadequate vet care. He was sedated for a deep ear treatment and eye assessment to see if he’s producing tears. His ears are so severely infected that they closed up and the doctor was unable to even stick a scope in them to assess. They were able to get a small syringe inside and packed his ears with meds.
Larry also has fractured teeth and advanced arthritis which is being addressed by the veterinary team. The rescue group also learned more about Larry’s past, including his true name, which is Wilson. The rescue agency learned that Wilson was kept as an outside dog and he adores other dogs, but not cats. He is also a fan of soccer, or at least he was in his younger days.
The rescue group intends to continue calling him Larry, and they are keeping him at the veterinary hospital until his terrible ear infection is under control. The organization is hopeful that Larry will be able to go to a foster home soon.
