In Jardinopolis, Brazil, a protective pit bull rescued a tiny puppy from the family swimming pool after the little one accidentally slipped and fell. The five-year-old dog named Athena keeps watch over the pool deck.

According to ShortNews video, Puma, the three-month-old chihuahua began yelping in terror as she realized she couldn’t get out of the pool. That’s when Athena sprung into action, ran over to the side of the pool, jumped in and then grabbed the puppy and brought her up to the pool deck where she was safe. A woman is then seen running over to the end of the pool.

When the owner of the dogs was interviewed, she said that Athena has a space on the terrace of the house where she acts as a lifeguard. When she realized the puppy was in danger of drowning, she rushed over and saved Puma’s life.

I put her up there so she doesn’t play with the small dogs, as she is big and heavy and could hurt them if she played with them. Athena saw that Puma was at risk, she came down the stairs, through the wooden gate, and she took it in her jaws to rescue it.
