A popular Detroit, Michigan, dog trainer died in a devastating fire while trying to save dogs who were inside of the Gardendale Street residence with him. According to multiple sources, Gary Majors got eight dogs out before he, and three other dogs, perished in the blaze late Monday night.

Fox 2 News spoke with individuals who knew Majors and they stated that he loved his dogs like he loved his kids. He was well known for training dogs for his clients, reports Mlive News.

Kenneth Young told the news agency:

“He was trying to get his dogs up out the house – running in and out trying to put the fire out with the fire extinguisher. I guess the smoke must have got him, but he was trying to save his dogs.”

The cause of the blaze is unknown and remains under investigation. Firefighters said that Majors was “burned beyond recognition” in the fire.
