A man has been arrested after breaking into a Texas animal shelter and freeing more than 150 dogs from their kennel runs. According to a release from the Abilene Police Department, one dog died after 38-year-old George Jones entered the city shelter early Friday morning.

The release states that many of the freed dogs fought, and that is how one of the dogs died:

Police were called out just before 7 a.m. to the Animal Services building located at 925 S. 25th street for the report of a break-in. Officers arrived to find that someone had climbed the fence that surrounds the building, entered into the building through the roof, and opened many of the cages to the canine side of the building, freeing many of the over 150 canines in the shelter.
Officers found one of the canines deceased, and several other canines injured due to what is believed to be fighting amongst the animals.

Jones also stole a shelter van, but it was recovered later in north Abilene.

Some of the shelter dogs escaped from the property; it is unclear if they have all been recovered. Jones was arrested and taken to the Taylor County Jail on charges of burglary of building, theft of motor vehicle and animal cruelty.
