In the first days of the war in Ukraine, Russian soldiers bombed a private stable in Gostomel. The first stable burned to the ground – the horses inside perished in the flames. Farm workers were able to release the horses in the second barn; some were rescued on the spot, but one special horse ran off into the forest.
According to the Ukrainian Equestrian Federation Charity Foundation, the horse, named Casablanca, lived in the forest for 40 days approximately 65 feet from where she lived prior to the fires. While wandering and looking for food and safety, she arrived at a sheep farm, but the owners had already fled; there was no one there to help Casablanca.
Photos of the lost horse had been circulating on social media, and when Casablanca’s owner recognized her horse, she agreed to let volunteers move her to a temporary stable near Kiev where she was given the veterinary help she desperately needed.
This week, Casablanca was finally reunited with her owner at the organization’s temporary shelter.
