Five Great Danes were euthanized after their deceased owner was found covered in bite wounds in a ditch south of Rossie, Iowa, on Monday afternoon. According to multiple sources, the dogs were standing over the woman, who has been identified as 43-year-old Mindy Kiepe. The person who made the grim discovery called 911, believing that he had encountered the victim of a motorcycle crash.

The State Medical Examiner determined that Kiepe died from “multiple bite injuries,” not from a motorcycle crash. The dogs belonged to her and her body was found not far from the driveway of her farm home in rural Rossie.

Nobody seems to know what caused the dog attack, and multiple people commenting on various social media posts regarding the tragic incident have expressed dismay that Great Danes could be capable of a fatal attack on their owner. The dogs are traditionally considered to be “gentle giants” who are affectionate and devoted to their owners. According to the American Kennel Club, Great Danes are considered to be “alert home guardians.”
