Family’s missing cat found after 7 years, and nearly 1500 miles away from home

A microchip has helped reunite a family in Maine with their cat, who vanished seven years ago. The cat, named Ashes, disappeared in the summer of 2015 and after fruitless searching, her family assumed that she had fallen prey to an animal.

Fast forward to January 2022, when the family received an unexpected phone call from a veterinary office in Longwood, Florida, letting them know that their long-lost cat was alive and well…nearly 1500 miles away. Fortunately, Denise Cilley, the cat’s owner, had kept her contact information up-to-date with the microchip company and because of that, the veterinary office was able to let the family know that Ashes had been found.

On GoFundMe, Ashes’ story was recounted:

She had been found as a stray and cared for by a local citizen who then brought her in for care when she exhibited symptoms of illness. A routine scan was able to identify Denise as the owner. She had kept the chip information updated and answered the phone when the vet called.

According to the fundraiser, a Southwest Airlines employee volunteered to fly Ashes from Florida to Maine. As soon as Ashes receives medical clearance, her trip home could be arranged. On February 4, an update revealed heartwarming news, Ashes would be home soon:

Ashes got the all clear to travel! She has her vaccination card in her paw and she is packing her bags as I write this. The vet thinks her jaw and teeth issue is an old injury that is stable at this time. We have met our fundraising goal. If you care to still donate, Denise has pledged to use any funds not needed for Ashes for microchip programs at needy shelters!

Remember – microchip your pets, AND keep your contact information current.
