At Richmond Animal Care and Control in Virginia, Sunday morning turned out to be heartbreaking when the staff arrived and found a sweet, suffering dog had been abandoned outside of the director’s office window. The dog could not stand, was freezing cold, emaciated and had dirt just pouring out of his mouth.
His frail body was quickly scooped up, and in the arms of the shelter’s director, he was gently placed in her vehicle and rushed to the Virginia Veterinarian Centers. Her heated seats were turned up on high just trying to raise his body temperature and hoping he would make it alive to the emergency hospital. Upon arrival, the staff at VVC jumped to help.
The dog’s body temperature was too low to register, and his blood pressure wasn’t strong enough to even place an intravenous line. They warmed him up, started sub Q fluids and everyone waited – hoping he would survive and his frail body could fight.
Happily, the dog survived the night and an intravenous line was successfully inserted. He is being closely monitored; his prognosis at this time is still unknown.
Keep him and us in your thoughts and prayers today. This job is hard – our team is constantly at odds inside our head and hearts wrestling with the inhumanity and the desire to help end the suffering of those pets that have been abused, abandoned and neglected.
