Clermont County, OH – When 28-year-old Emily Black’s boyfriend’s new E-bike battery exploded on Monday night, it started a fire in their condominium in Union Township. According to Fox 19 News, Black and her boyfriend fled the burning structure, but Emily rushed back inside when she realized that their dog, Benji, was still inside.

Tragically, Black and her beloved dog died in the horrible blaze. Her boyfriend, whose name was not released, suffered severe burns and is in the hospital “fighting for his life.”

Emily’s mom, Belinda Thomas, told the news agency that Benji was not just her daughter’s dog…he was like a child to her and she understands why she put her life on the line to try and save him.

Thomas and Emily’s step-father described the e-bike battery explosion that is believed to have caused the deadly fire:

“When he went to plug it in, it exploded on him,” said Emily’s step-father. “And he was trying to put out the fire with the fire extinguisher, and he was getting severely burned.”

Rest in peace Emily and Benji.
