A dog whose front legs were severed in a suspected impact from a train is in “great spirits.” It was less than two months ago that Athena was discovered with horrific injuries to her front limbs. According to This Is Houston, the initial assumption is that the injuries were bad enough that Athena would likely have to be euthanized.
But that didn’t happen, and today Athena is showing the world that she is a survivor with a spirit that cannot be suppressed. Days ago, This Is Houston updated Facebook fans about Athena’s current situation:

We’re having some set back with one of her legs. Last week, one of her stumps was swollen and warm to the touch with discharge. New x-rays were taken and revealed some bone infection so they took a culture and sent it off for testing. Once we get results back, she’ll get IV catheters placed and bandaged into her stump. We’ll use the appropriate antibiotic via IV for a couple weeks to try and treat the infection. If we cannot treat it, we may have to do a full limb amputation.
A wheelchair for Athena will arrive soon and despite all of the trials and tribulations, the animal welfare agency acknowledges Athena’s indomitable spirit, writing:
She’s still a happy girl despite everything. She definitely has the right attitude. She’s truly one of a kind and she’s so inspiring.
