Camarillo, CA – The man suspected of breaking into an animal shelter in Camarillo, and stealing a dog who was later found severely injured and subsequently died, has been arrested and charged. According to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, Miles Berry, of Thousand Oaks, was arrested on September 28 and charged with burglary, animal cruelty, and attempted burglary for the June 9 break-in at Paw Works.

Berry allegedly stole “Pretty Girl,” a 2-year-old German Shepherd. The dog was found hours later near the US 101 Freeway at Wendy Drive suffering from significant injuries. A good Samaritan transported Pretty Girl to an emergency veterinarian, but she had to be euthanized because of her injuries. According to the news release, Berry tried to break in a second time:

On September 4, 2022, Paw Works received an alarm activation during the early morning hours. Upon reviewing the video surveillance of the incident, detectives determined the same suspect attempted to gain entry into Paw Works for the second time. A neighboring business provided video surveillance, which assisted investigators in identifying the suspect.

After obtaining a search warrant, deputies were able to enter Berry’s residence where they found evidence that linked him to the crimes.

Berry was booked into the Pre-Trial Detention Facility in Ventura.
