A large reward is being offered for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of whoever stole a German shepherd from a California animal shelter. The dog, named Pretty Girl, was taken during the night from the Paw Works shelter in Camarillo, and she was found later the same day injured in the middle of Highway 101 at the Conejo Grade between Camarillo and Thousand Oaks.

The three-year-old dog had severe injuries and deteriorated shortly after being taken to a veterinarian by a good Samaritan.

The initial information about this cruel theft was posted to the shelter’s Facebook page on June 9:

Early this morning our facility was broken into!! As you can see from this video the perpetrator took one dog, Pretty Girl. Nothing or no one else was harmed. If you notice anything familiar about this person please contact us immediately or if you have any information that can help us find Pretty Girl please call (805) 799-3937.
This happened in the area of:
2255 Pleasant Valley Rd.
Camarillo, CA 93012

The video shows someone in shorts and a hoodie walking around the room full of crated dogs and opening the door of Pretty Girl’s cage and pulling her out. The dog can be seen resisting and the person smacks her in the face with a flashlight.

On June 13, PETA issued a release about the case and the reward that has been offered:

PETA is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction on cruelty charges of the person(s) who stole a dog named Pretty Girl from the local rescue group Paw Works and killed her. Together with funds raised by Paw Works, the total reward offered in this case is now up to $17,000.

Detailing what is known about the crime:

Paw Works’ security footage reveals that at 2:42 a.m. on Thursday, a light-complexioned person wearing a white hoodie and loose-fitting shorts picked the lock to the building, snatched Pretty Girl—a 45-pound 2-year-old tan-and-black mixed-breed dog with a black snout and upright ears—from her crate, and hit her when she fought back. On Thursday morning, a passerby found Pretty Girl on the side of Route 101 with life-threatening injuries and took her to the Paw Works Veterinary Hospital, where she later died. The Paw Works team reports that Pretty Girl had severe back, neck, and head trauma; intense bruising and bleeding in her abdomen; and swelling around her rectum.

Tipsters should contact the Camarillo Police Department at 805-388-5100.
