In Brooksville, Florida, the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office arrested a 34-year-old kennel owner on Tuesday and charged him with animal cruelty after 11 dead puppies were found at his kennel. Jian Karlos Ortiz Mendez is being held in jail in lieu of a $23,000 bond.
According to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office statement, deputies believe several “very sick” puppies that had been sold died within a week of going to their new homes. An investigation began at the Golden Kennel after reports of sick puppies being sold and dying. Several of the puppies had succumbed to Canine parvovirus within days of having been sold.
At the kennel, a deputy observed a “very sick puppy” on the floor who Mendez claimed that his veterinarian had been notified. After serving a search warrant, 11 dead puppies were found and improperly disposed of in trash cans.
