In February, a dog named Happy was discovered 8 days after he and his owner, Josh Hall, were supposed to return from a hike in Boulder County, Colorado. The dog had lost weight, but was in otherwise good condition. Volunteers searched tirelessly for Hall, but until a body was discovered in July, he had seemingly vanished without a trace.
Fast forward to July 3, when the coroner’s office confirmed that a body found on July 1, just over four miles from Hessie Trailhead, was the missing 27-year-old hiker. Hall had disappeared after a snowstorm hit the area that he was hiking in. A cell phone ping near Devil’s Thumb Lake led volunteer search and rescue teams to scour the area.
On July 3, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office issued a statement about the discovery of Hall’s body:
Today, the Boulder County Coroner’s Office confirmed that the remains found by a professional volunteer with Front Range Rescue Dogs on Thursday, 4.3 miles west of Hessie Trailhead, were those of Josh Hall. We are heartbroken for his friends and family. We want to thank the professional volunteers and numerous organizations who spent more than 700 hours searching for Josh. Thank you, as well, to the community members who helped the Hall family in many ways.
Happy was reunited with family members.
Hall’s cause of death has not yet been determined.
