An Erie, Pennsylvania, woman has been sentenced to jail time for fatally beating a dog with a hammer. As reported by Erie News Now, 38-year-old Justina Robinson was sentenced to 23 months in prison plus five years probation after pleading guilty to a felony count of aggravated animal cruelty.
In October 2019, Robinson caused fatal injuries to an 11-month-old chocolate lab retriever mix puppy – she initially lied to the police and stated that the dog was injured by someone who broke into her apartment. But her story was inconsistent and she finally confessed to the crime after being questioned further.
The pup, named Izzy, survived the beating but had to be put down because his skull was so badly damaged. Nicole Bawol, Executive Director, Erie Humane Society, told the news agency:
What my humane officer saw was cold blooded murder. It was horrific. It was absolutely the worst thing I have ever seen in the 4 1/2 years I have worked in the animal industry.”
Robinson could be released from jail soon because she has already served 261 days.
