Across France, authorities have been investigating sickening acts of animal cruelty to horses prompting police to open up more than 153 cases of mutilations and deaths of horses.
“… thirty of the attacks are particularly serious …violent injuries or deaths…”
According to the BBCNews, horses have had their ears cut off, eyes gouged out and their genitals mutilated. No motive has been given, however theories have included satanic rituals, macabre trophy hunts or internet challenges.
The latest attack occurred on Sunday in the south of Dijon when the horse’s owner notified authorities in the middle of the night after seeing a pair of headlights in his pasture. Fortunately, that horse was not injured.
Police do not know if only one person is involved or if the attacks have inspired copycat killings.
On Monday, one person was detained based on a composite photo a witness had supplied to the Gendarmaeri De L’Yonne . The 50-year-old male was released after his alibi checked out.
A photo sketch of one suspect has been released by authorities after an attack in August. Anyone with information is asked to contact the police.
