A Florida man has been arrested for fatally shooting a dog who was inside of a fenced yard in Gainesville. As reported by WCJB News, the shooting took place on Tuesday at a residence located at 6334 SW 59th Street.

A responding deputy found a deceased pit bull on the porch of the home. The dog’s owner told the deputy that he heard his dog barking and when he went to check on his pet, he found 36-year-old John Mitchell kicking his dog through the fence. Mitchell then pulled out a handgun and shot the dog through the chain link fencing.

The injured dog ran back to his owner before dying on the porch. Mitchell admitted to killing the dog and was arrested and charged with aggravated animal cruelty, and discharging a firearm in public onto a residential property.
