Shenzhen has become the first Chinese city to ban the sale and consumption of dogs and cats. The new legislation comes after the coronavirus pandemic had been widely linked to wildlife trade and consumption. In February, wildlife consumption and sales were banned.
According to BankokPost, the new law comes into force on May 1, 2020.

VICTORY! 🎉 We are SO excited to announce that Shenzhen, China’s 5th largest city, becomes the first city in mainland China to adopt a comprehensive ban on the consumption of dogs, cats, and wild animals.
More than 30 million dogs are killed in Asia for their meat, however the majority of Chinese people do not eat dog meat nor have they ever done so.
“Dogs and cats as pets have established a much closer relationship with humans than all other animals, and banning the consumption of dogs and cats and other pets is a common practice in developed countries and in Hong Kong and Taiwan,” stated a Shenzhen city official as reported by Reuters.
Unfortunately, at the same time China approved the use of bear bile to treat COVID-19 patients. Bears are raised and caged in farms – their bile painfully extracted from their livers, has long been used in Chinese medicine. There has been no proof, however that the active ingredient, ursodeoxycholic acid works in treating the virus.
Scientists have still not confirmed the source of the virus nor do they know how it could have spread to humans.
