A man who used to attend Ohio’s Miami University has been ordered to return to China as part of his sentencing for allowing a dog to starve to death. As reported by the Journal-News, 22-year-old Hangming Zhang was supposed to be caring for his friend’s dog, but instead he abandoned the dog inside of a cage left in an unoccupied unit at the Fox and Hounds Apartment complex.
After Zhang pleaded guilty to a charge of cruelty to companion animals, a fifth-degree felony, Judge Keith Spaeth sentenced Zhang to 56 days in the county jail. The man was given credit for time already served. Judge Spaeth then told Zhang that he must return to China on the earliest available flight.
Zhang expressed remorse for letting the dog starve to death and his attorney, John Li, blamed the dog’s death on a “miscommunication.” He stated:
It was not his dog, he wanted to make use of the opportunity to do a good deed. There was miscommunication with the dog’s owner
The dog was found dead inside of the cage in an unoccupied apartment unit on November 25 – the police determined that Zhang had not been to the apartment to care for the dog since October 13.
