Rare congenital one-eyed ‘cyclops’ puppy born in Thailand

Early this week, a puppy with a rare congenital one-eyed condition referred to as a “cyclops” puppy was born in a litter in Chachoengsao, Thailand. Just a few days after the puppy’s birth, the tragic news that he may not survive was announced.

According to Yahoo, the puppy who has been named Kevin because of his extraordinary resemblance to the Minions character, does not have a long life expectancy.

“Cyclopia is a very rare congenital issue where the foetus fails to develop two separate orbital spaces (the cavities in which eyeballs sit). It is a form of what is known medically as holoprosencephaly. Animals born with cyclopia often also have abnormal lips, noses and nasal spaces.

Sadly, it is rare for these animals to survive very long after birth as the brain is also usually affected.”

The owner of the dogs, Somjai Phummaman stated he saw the mother dog, Aspin giving birth to two puppies in his bedroom. He put the newborns in a box to keep them warm, and that’s when he noticed the one unusual puppy. Everyone is hoping the puppy survives.

It is not known if Kevin can even see out of his one eye; it can take up to two months before a puppy’s eyesight develops.
