Efforts are underway to save horses from a deadly virus sweeping through Thailand. As reported by Science Magazine, hundreds of horse have perished over the last several weeks from the African horse sickness (AHS). Is is suspected that the deadly virus made its way to Thailand via zebras imported from Africa.
AHS has not had a major outbreak outside of Africa in over 30 years. Simon Carpenter, an entomologist at the Pirbright Laboratory in the United Kingdom, tells the news outlet about the seriousness the virus poses:
“A sustained, persistent outbreak of [AHS] that spreads to other countries would be devastating, not only to the racing industry and companion animals, but also to some of the poorest workers in the region relying on working horses, donkeys, and mules.”
The virus is spread via biting midges (flies), and horse owners are scrambling to secure their animals indoors, or with netting, to keep them safe. There is fear that the virus could spread to Australia if the wind-borne midges make their way across the ocean. Once infected, horses stand a 70 percent chance of dying as the virus attacks their heart and lungs.
Veterinarians are trying to test and vaccinate horses to help thwart the virus’ deadly spread.
