In Harpurhey, Manchester, a litter of puppies stolen by two machete-wielding robbers on Saturday, have been returned and reunited with their mother. The burglars had stuffed the puppies into a bag; the mother dog trying to protect her babies growled and was subsequently hit on the head with a machete – leaving a deep injury to the dog’s face.

On Sunday, officers from Greater Manchester Police found all six puppies at a property in Moston. A suspect has been arrested and charged with suspicion of aggravated burglary. He remains in police custody.

“The puppies are all safe and well, and have been reunited with their mother Zena, who was absolutely delighted to see them,” Detective Con Nick Kershaw told BBC News.

The man attacked at the home suffered wounds to his hands and arms as he tried to defend himself from  the machete carrying men who also stole cash, keys and a phone.
