Over 300 dogs seized from ‘unsafe’ breeding operation in Florida

Over 300 dogs have been seized from an “unsafe”‘ breeding operation in Tampa, Florida. According to multiple sources, the dogs were removed from Trish’s All Breed Grooming, also known as Toyland Pet Resort, and taken in at the Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center.

The dogs were living in crowded conditions described as “deplorable,” and “unsanitary.” One dog was dead when officials arrived and another, suffering from multiple broken bones, had to be humanely euthanized. Several other dogs were in poor health and had to receive urgent veterinary care.

On Sept. 23, the Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center addressed the huge influx of dogs at the shelter:

For years, we believed that more than 300 dogs were living in unsafe and unsanitary conditions as part of an animal-breeding business in Tampa and took the responsible party to court. Today, we have been awarded custody of these pets.

This morning, Animal Control officers began the process of bringing the hundreds of pets to our shelter to be assessed and undergo any needed medical treatment. As you know, our shelter was already over capacity. This large influx of dogs will create stress on our space and resources, as state law requires these pets to be kept at least 30 days in case of appeal. Because of this, none of the incoming dogs will be available for adoption or to rescue groups immediately.

As reported by News Channel 8, Robert Royers has been identified as the owner of the breeding operation. Royers has been in trouble for having too many pets in the past and he is banned from owning pets in Hillsborough County. Back in 2011, 450 dogs were seized from the same breeding operation on property owned by Alice Holt, who is also banned from owning dogs in the county.

Though the animal shelter has been deeply impacted by the large intake of dogs, the community has reached out to help. A week after the dogs were taken in, the shelter wrote:

Thank you to all of our wonderful pet lovers across the country that sent in donations for over 300 pets that we seized from an unsafe breeding operation. Without your generosity, we could not provide for these pets as well as we can now. Beds, food, treats, and toys have filled our rooms and our hearts with joy. We appreciate the continued kindness you have shared with our pets!
