Terrifying moment truck pulls out of gas station with dog tethered to bumper

The terrifying moment that a dog was nearly dragged to its death behind a semi-truck was captured on video. The black and white pit bull was tethered behind a white semi-truck which was pulling out of a gas station in Arizona, fortunately, before tragedy happened, the driver was stopped.

The dog’s hero

The harrowing incident was recounted by the Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office on Monday. According to the department, a Volunteer in Protection (VIP) had just finished taking a break at the same gas station when he encountered the truck with the dog tethered to the rear bumper.

The truck driver was headed towards the interstate, but stopped when the VIP activated his lights and siren. The sheriff’s office stated:

A very grateful owner retrieved his pet and expressed deep appreciation for the VIP’s efforts.

Adding:

Patrol VIPs act only as eyes and hears when they are in the field, but this exception to use lights and siren to save this dog from injury or death has been deemed warranted by YCSO Command Staff. The driver was simply distracted and headed towards the interstate forgetting to unleash his dog. No charges are being sought.

The Patrol VIP is actually out in the field assisting deputies in various aspects of their patrol duties including transporting prisoners, assisting motorists, traffic control, crime scene security, vacation property checks, etc. In the video, one of our VIPS was leaving a parking lot after a quick drink break to assist a deputy when he came across a tractor trailer pulling out of a gas station parking lot with a dog attached to the trailer bumper. The driver was heading to the interstate. He quickly activated his lights and siren to alert the driver who stopped and was notified about the dog in tow. A very grateful owner retrieved his pet and expressed deep appreciation for the VIP’s efforts. A word of warning

Each year, dogs are dragged to their death after their owner forgets that they are tethered to the back of a vehicle. Dogs should NEVER be tethered to a vehicle. If you see someone attempting to drive with a dog attached to a bumper, please do everything in your power to alert the driver before the unthinkable takes place.

I IS HARD to BELIEVE that a Truck Driver Could be So Distracted or Tired they would forget Their Companion tied Behind them… BUT my husband was an OWNER /LEASER for SEVERAL years and I Saw HIM so TIRED when he came home a few times, I WAS ASTONISHED HE had Managed to get HOME Without having a Catastrophic Event !!! I am so VERY PLEASED this PATROL VIP was ON THE JOB and that the Trucker responded to the Lights and Siren!!!! I BET that Dog Got Extra Love and Treats and his OWNER HAD a Talk with the HIGHER POWER ! Bless them All for a Wonderful Outcome for a Change…

I find it hard to believe that the owner forgot or was distracted. The owner should not be driving if he was that tired/distracted before he kills others on the road. Glad the officer prevented a tragedy but I think this was intentional! Would you tie a child to a vehicle and forget?
