On Saturday, a pedicab driver in New York City captured the distressing moment that a carriage horse repeatedly fell on the street in Central Park. As reported by NBC New York News the horse was hauled away in a trailer and then euthanized.
The video shows a horse stumbling to the ground time and again as the back legs buckled. The Historic Horse-Drawn Carriages of Central Park has stated that the horse suffered a “cardiac issue” and was humanely euthanized. But Edita Birnkrant, executive director of NYCLASS (New Yorkers for Clean, Livable, and Safe Streets), believes that the horse’s death is the direct result of being overworked and poorly cared for.
A protest against carriage horse rides is planned for Sunday. The Facebook page, Stopping NYC Horse Abuse writes:
TRAGIC UPDATE: Carriage horse who collapsed today in this video is DEAD!
Join our PROTEST Sunday at 1 pm at 618 West 52 St stable. Wear all black. This is a funeral protest. Carriage drivers have blood on their hands!
