Two badly neglected horses have been rescued from inhumane conditions in Ludlow, Massachusetts. According to MSPCA-Angell rescuers, it is the worst case of neglect they have encountered. The two horses were rescued on February 5 – rescuers had to dig for hours to free the horses from their stalls, which were piled high with manure.

Boston 25 News reports that it took rescuers two hours to get the 13 and 11-year-old horses out of the filthy stalls. After being freed, the horses were transported to Nevins Farm for care. Roger Lauze, with the horse rescue, tells the news agency of the horses’ pitiful condition:

“The hooves on these horses were so overgrown and disfigured that it will take years of farrier work for them to reshape—if that’s even possible,” he said.

The horses, 13-year-old Shakira and 11-year-old Tia, have been surrendered by their owner, Nancy L. Golec, who is facing four counts of felony animal cruelty. Both horses will be made available for adoption. Anyone interested in learning more about these horses is asked to reach out to email [email protected].
