A Pennsylvania couple is facing charges after they moved out of their home and left two dogs alone inside of the otherwise empty house. Adding insult to injury, the dogs were left inside of cages without food or water, reports WNEP News.
One of the dogs, a shepherd mix, was able to break out of his cage, but the other dog was stuck in her crate, surrounded by her own feces and urine. The cruel situation was discovered after neighbors complained about non-stop barking coming from inside of the Schuylkill County residence. Police describe the condition inside as “deplorable.”
Humane officer Michaela Royer tells the news agency:
Just standing outside the house, you could smell the feces and the urine, and then once you walked in, it was nothing like we’d pictured it’d be. There was feces everywhere, and once we got to the kitchen and saw the crates, it was something out of a nightmare.
The couple accused of abandoning the two dogs are identified as Derek Reese and Kayla Schaeffer; they have turned themselves in to the police and are facing animal cruelty charges. The dogs, Rugar and Renny, have been taken in at the Hillside SPCA where they will be altered and then placed up for adoption.
