Loose dog running along Tampa’s I-275 safe because of Florida Highway Patrol officer

On Wednesday morning, a stray dog was spotted in the median of Tampa’s I-275. The dog appeared frightened and avoided motorists’ gestures to be rescued.

It had been early in the morning when a passerby notified authorities of the dog. Fortunately, Trooper Andrew Fuqua, with the Florida Highway Patrol, arrived at the scene a few minutes later and saw the dog nervously pacing up and down the median. When he approached, the dog was obviously agitated and growled.

Trooper Fuqua was able to keep the dog from running into the heavy rush-hour traffic until specialized help arrived. Hillsborough County Animal Control was then contacted about the dog. For the safety of motorists and the dog, traffic was diverted until the dog was safely placed in the animal control vehicle

It is not known why the dog was on the highway. The dog was taken to the Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center, where she spent the day decompressing in a kennel. Let’s hope she accidentally was lost, and her family will be reclaiming her.

Otherwise, we hope she is cleared to be adopted soon.

Many thanks to Trooper Fuqua for being a compassionate dog lover and using the kindest actions to rescue the pup safely.
