In Vermilion, Ohio, a dog named Sugar was miraculously rescued along the Lake Erie shoreline after having been ejected from a car after a rollover crash on Monday, June 29, 2026.

According to the Vermilion Police Department, the accident occurred in the afternoon on Liberty Avenue. A Ring doorbell camera videoed the severe crash. The driver of the car admitted to having lost control of her Ford Focus while texting. She hit a large landscaping boulder and then rolled over several times.
Luckily the driver had been wearing a seat belt and escaped with only minor injuries. She was cited by the Vermilion Police Department for failing to control a vehicle and texting while driving. Her dog, Sugar, however had been thrown from the car and ran into the woods.
The community had heard about the crash and wanted to help find Sugar. After a 24-hour search, a group of children who had been playing near Lake Erie spotted frightened Sugar hiding inside of a hole along the shoreline boulders.

Sugar had worked her way down the steep shoreline and found a hole amongst the boulders that she crawled into right along the waters edge to stay cool and wet. VFD Chief Brown and the VFD then coordinated the rescue of Sugar along with VPD Officers and Lifecare EMT’s. Sugar was carried up to the roadway and transported to the Vermilion Veterinary Clinic for an evaluation and treatment of her injuries.
With the help of the Vermilion Fire Department, Sugar was able to be freed from the boulders. The firemen carried the dog up the steep embankment and rushed her to the Vermilion Veterinarian Clinic for treatment.

What was also very heartwarming was how Vermilion Police Chief Scott Holmes awarded the children “Did the Right Thing” ice cream coupons. Mayor Russ Owens has promised to take these wonderful children out to a local restaurant to celebrate their accomplishments.
