Sometimes, things are not always as they seem, and sometimes, heartbreaking decisions are very difficult to deal with as life moves on. Alexandra DuPont no longer has her tiny therapy Yorkshire terrier after Miami-Dade Animal Services legally adopted him out to a new family two days after his hold was up.

But there’s more to the story than just an owner not coming to the shelter to reclaim her dog for some of the senseless excuses we read about too often. According to WxvnNews, in November, Dupont had been living on her boat in Key Biscayne with her tiny pup Bello when Miami Marine Patrol officers arrived at her boat and found that it had not been properly registered. DuPont was then taken to jail, and her little dog was taken to Miami-Dade Animal Services.

I wouldn’t give up the dog, but they put handcuffs on me. I was screaming ‘you cannot take my dog, this is not just a dog. This is my therapy dog.’ They just walked away with the dog!

Policy calls for pets to be taken to the nearest shelter for three days, and if no one comes to pick them up, they are put up for adoption. Bello did have a microchip, but it had not been registered.

When DuPont was released 12 days later, she went to the shelter to reclaim her dog, but found out the dog had been adopted out to another family.

Perhaps the most heartbreaking part of this story is when Bello arrived in DuPont’s life. The woman had just lost her husband from cancer, and the pup had been serving a huge part in her emotional recovery. We know how important our dogs are when we need emotional support. They are there for us!

The Miami-Dade Animal Services did call the new owners and asked them to return the dog based on the story, and DuPont even offered to buy the family a new pet, but they just hung up on her.

We are so sorry for this disappointing news for DuPont and do hope the new owners will reconsider and return the woman’s dog. Acts of kindness are always so appreciated and certainly make us appreciate each other so much more.

  1. Bullies with badges strike again. 12 days in jail for an improperly registered boat seems rather harsh…….

I am very sorry for her losing her therapy dog Bello. No, it’s not possible to replace Bello but perhaps she can give another dog a chance to be her therapy partner?

    • typical mdas bs! this was not a legal adoption since the pet WAS NOT A FREAKING STRAY. There should never have been a stray hold on the pet. He came in legally owned. This is totally FUBAR!! The new adopters will be forced to surrender the dog.

  2. SAD, BUT I AM REALLY GLAD THIS DOG WAS NOT KILLED—THIS IS A HIGH AND FAST KILL SHELTER!

THIS SHOWS THEY ARE MAKING SOME PROGRESS IN SAVING LIVES! GREAT START!
