Arizona’s Glendale Police Department has some of the most amazing officers who have used innovative ideas to rescue pets in distress. Take the June 17th incident for example; a call came in about a dog stuck in a canal who just didn’t seem to want to get too close to his would be rescuers, but was not able to figure out how to get out of the water.

According to the Glendale Police Department’s Facebook, when police arrived, they discovered a German shepherd swimming back and forth.

Officers arrived on scene and located a tired German shepherd swimming back and forth in the canal. Officer Sorenson took immediate action by removing his ballistic vest and gun belt and entered the canal to try and rescue the dog. The dog was skittish and did not immediately come to Officer Sorenson.

And so the officers tried the usual methods to get the dog’s attention, and tried to lure him over to the edge of the canal so they could hoist him out by slipping a leash around his neck, but the dog had no intention of trusting these strangers and just wouldn’t swim close enough to the canal’s edge to capture him.

But then came an ingenuous solution – perhaps only something a dog lover would know? Officer Downey had freshly baked pumpkin muffins from his wife for her husband’s shift, so maybe using that as bait would interest the dog?

Try this, It’s my wife’s pumpkin muffins.

And as Officer Downey handed the muffin over to Officer Sorenson who climbed into the water, then called out to the dog.

Look what I got!!

Yes, the dog was still afraid, but the smell of that muffin was just too aromatic and likely very delicious, so towards the officer the dog paddled, his eyes focused on the reward if he approached close enough. Once he got within reach, Officer Sorenson picked up the dog and hoisted him safely to the shore.

And yes, the dog was given the delicious muffin.

Please do stop over at the Glendale Police Department’s Facebook page and give them all “attaboys.” These guys rock.
