Back in October 2022, a suspected thief was attacked by the family dog while trying to break into their home in the municipality of Copoya, Mexico. The family dog, a pit bull blend named Max, attacked the suspect, alerting the owners who then called 911 for assistance.

When authorities arrived, they found the suspect, Jose Arbey, “howling in pain in a pool of blood” according to the Mexico Daily Press. The dog had partially severed Arbey’s arm requiring the man to undergo surgery at an emergency hospital.

And in a very unusual turn of events, the suspect’s family demanded Max be euthanized stating the loyal dog posed “a danger to Arbey’s profession.”

It was then that animal lovers and rescuers began posting on social media with their concerns about the dog’s future, and followed petitions, emails and letters to authorities asking that Max’s life be spared; stating the dog had done his job and defended both his home and his humans.

And it wasn’t long before the Director of Protection Against Community Health Risks, Alfredo Ruiz Coutino, confirmed Max would not be euthanized.

The thief’s family requested that Max to be euthanized because he literally tore off the thief’s arm. But today, the Director of Municipal Protection Against Health Risks reported that there are no legal grounds to punish the dog.

Max defended his home from a criminal, just as anyone would have done. Indeed, he is a hero!

  1. Max is a hero I’m glad everyone saw through the thief’s family’s attempts to make Max the villain instead of acknowledging their family member’s wrong doing

  2. We should ALL be proud of this precious treasure!!! He guarded his family home!!!

The suspect deserved to lose his arm (& “job”). The family was totally wrong to demand euthanasia for an excellent dog…….. I have no doubt that there would have been serious and violent consequences had such a brave dog been “summarily executed” due to a criminal’s family request…… no one has the right to be a criminal…… last time I checked, criminals are arrested, prosecuted, convicted and sentenced…….. no “protection of being criminals”……..

This dog deserves a very nice steak dinner!!!

  3. When I was 14 my parents owned a bar. When they left at night they put the guard dog Quilla, a Doberman in the bar because they had several break-ins. One morning when they went to clean and open the bar they found the back door open. As they slowly walked in they saw blood all over the floor and a white mans hand. Quilla was sitting there and my mom swore she was smiling. Everyone knew Quilla was in the bar so it had to be someone from out of town because no one ever showed up at a hospital missing their hand. No one ever said to kill our dog, the sheriff and D.A. said she was just doing her job.
    Good boy Max!
