In Deltona, Florida, having a close call with an aggressive alligator had to have been one scary experience for a chocolate Labrador retriever named Winston and his owner. Winston’s human who prefers to remain unnamed, acted quickly when he was forced to shoot the gator four times to save his dog.

According to WsvnNews, the seven-foot alligator attacked the dog and latched onto the dog’s head. The dog’s owner knew he had to save the life of his dog, even though he didn’t want to harm the gator, but this became a matter of life and death – and there were only seconds left to save Winston. Had the man waited, Winston likely would not have survived.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission were at the man’s home to remove the gator and want to warn people this is alligator mating season, and there will be more gators around, and it is very possible they will be more aggressive. It is believed the gator entered the man’s yard through a broken portion of his fence.

It is advised to stay away from ponds and lakes where alligators are frequently seen, and be warned to never let your dog go anywhere in these vicinities without a collar and leash.

Winston suffered some superficial wounds to his head and neck area, but is already feeling better and is expected to make a full recovery.
