On Thursday, the Iditarod issued a release about a missing sled dog who escaped from a return dog area in Anchorage, Alaska. The dog, named Jimbo, got out around 7:15 a.m. yesterday during an hourly veterinary check.
Jimbo is part of Richie Diehl’s team; at the time of his disappearance, he was wearing a collar with a red tag that says Iditarod No. 18. Jimbo is microchipped and there is an extensive search underway in the surrounding area. The local animal shelters and police have also been alerted to the situation.
Diehl’s wife Emerie Fairbanks tells Alaska News Source, “It’s super nerve-wracking, especially having him being in Anchorage. Where he’s used to out here in Aniak where he sees snowmachines, four-wheelers and maybe a truck here or there. He’s not used to traffic. He’s not really around too many people.”
The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race advises:
If you see him, please do not approach. Instead, please call 907-248-MUSH (6874) and report the location so Iditarod personnel can get to the area. Sled dogs tend to stick to the side of the road or on a trail, so please do not attempt to capture.
