Three dogs in Coventry, Rhode Island, are safe after two heroic boys sprang into action after hearing an alarm coming from a home earlier this month. As reported by WPRI News, Anthony Lombardi and Mario Comella, ages 12 and 13, were riding their bikes when they heard a fire alarm from a neighbor’s home.

The boys went to investigate and could see that smoke was filling the interior of the house, and that there were dogs inside.

The boys contacted their friend, who lives at the house, and they were given the door code to access the home’s interior. Two dogs, Faith and Boo, immediately ran out when the door was opened, but there was one more inside…a German shepherd puppy who was locked in a cage.

Comella sprang into action, running into the smokey house and freeing the puppy from his crate. The dogs’ owners, who were away at breakfast, are grateful for the boys’ quick thinking and brave actions. Athena DiBenedetto told the news agency:

“It was very emotional. Those are my babies. I still can’t watch [the security video] without getting teary-eyed and thinking about what would have happened if they were there five or 10 minutes later,”

The near-tragedy was instigated after one of the dogs accidentally turned on the kitchen stove, which had a wood cutting board sitting on it. The board had been smoldering for about an hour when the boys heard the fire alarms going off.
